Meet our Who’s Next Gallery winner FRESH TOAST…! Who are you and what type of art do you do? My name is fresh toast. I do paintings, design work, and mixed media. I am an illustrator at heart and use bold outlines. any medium the presents itself I will try! What mediums do you work with? I use acrylics to base most of my outlines with. Then I outline and scan on computer. From there I print out and use the design as needed. Or I just use aerosol. I also work with vinyl for toys and resin for my bootleg toys, but I live with acrylics and screen printing. What’s your background? My mother is an artist, my father is a hard working dude, screenprinting dropped into his lap and basically ive grown up with it, ink, tshirts and production. I didnt really fall in love with it till right after High School. At that time, graffiti really got me into art. I used to drive to work from Jupiter down to miami and see all the pieces on 95 and i would say” Hey, I want to do that.” So I started screen printing stickers and doing trades. What art do you most identify with? Street art. What type of art do you most enjoying doing? Acrylics, at times. Some days I like to paint out back in the yard on a canvas… sometimes I just like the aerosol. Sometimes I mix them, but right now, acrylic. What’s your strongest art memory of your childhood? Honestly, I have to say my mother. When I was growing up, my mom would make these cakes, like bert and ernie or Ninja turtle. Cut it out and frost it do the gel and it just looked beautiful. What’s your favorite piece of art or artist? That’s a hard one! I gotta say my favorite piece of art is when some one gets drunk, obviously has no artist skill and writes some poetic nothingness on the wall. You see it and like, the “G” maybe too big and it makes you think, “thats just raw”. It makes me inspired to create! What do you like about the art world? Meeting other artists that you can can tell are fully honest and genuine, not just “oh, yea, I like your stuff” and then dismiss you. It seems like when you meet other artists you it is different than meeting other humans. Like nowadays, you can walk down the street and see someone and say “HEY!” and they don’t even respond, its like, what type of human are you? C’mon. What do you dislike about the art world? I feel like the art world has changed so much. Like we went to school and learned about art history, but I feel like we hit a time where it is like “BOOM”, what is art? The guy that built a table, he’s an artists. But is that going to be recorded in history? So is he an artist? I dont know… seems like people get recognized that really shouldnt be. People look at art and see it for what books and media tell them to like. They will look at a pice and say “hey, the book says this is art, so it is art” Just doesnt seem right. What makes you angry? In general- people that are mean or rude. Art wise- biters that just blatantly bite other artists styles just because it is good quality. Like, they will see a popular artist and see they are successful and just bite their style so they can be popular too. What superpower would you have and why? Mind reading. I want to know what you are thinking! I could be talking to you and be like, “oh, this guy likes some “good n Plenty” and I can use that to my advantage… by getting you some “Good n Plenty.” Either that or invisibility … who wouldn’t want to be invisible! You could do anything! What is your dream project? My dream project would be to go to japan and learn the art of soft vinyl toy making. Then make put an american twist on it so I can produce figures with it. Name three artists you’d like to be compared to. No one really. I just hope in time people will see my work and just recognize it for my work only. Just compare me to me. Thats the best compliment you could give me. Favorite or most inspirational place? My drafting table. That is where it happens for me, thats where I create. Some times I will stargaze… but only for a minute. Then back to the table. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Be yourself and trust your gut… but my biggest problem is I don’t ever follow this advice… because I need reassurance, which is lame cause it always comes from people who really don’t care. Professionally, what’s your goal? To make a career out of my brain. Just keep doing THIS. Keep producing, constant evolution. Constantly trying different things, make it weird stuff you have never seen. I really want to make Fresh Toast a new form of street art, cause the T-shirt is like a canvas… not many people see that. So I would like to satisfy my life with THIS. What wouldn’t you do without? I couldn’t live with out the constant reminder that you need to do better, if it wasn’t for that I would just stop. I couldn’t live with out that weird push that doesn’t make sense and you hate but at the same time you love. I couldn’t do with out the sickness, just to keep moving on and painting and creating. It is a stupid cycle but I love it. Any last words to the fans? Just a thank you to anyone that connects with what I produce, I have mad love for you. Anyone that has ever liked my stuff, thank you, it keeps me going.
